Services provides medically supervised methadone maintenance and Suboxone (buprenorphine) detox treatment to individuals who are attempting to overcome an addiction to or dependence upon heroin or other opioids.
Methadone hydrochloride is a synthetic "opioid agonist," which means that it acts in a way that is similar to morphine and other narcotic medications.
When used in proper doses as part of a medically supervised opioid addiction treatment program, methadone blocks cravings and other withdrawal symptoms without creating the euphoric or sedative states that result from opioid abuse.
Buprenorphine is a partial opioid receptor agonist. Like methadone, buprenorphine can relieve opioid withdrawal symptoms without producing the intoxicating effects that are associated with opioid abuse.
Buprenorphine was the first medication for the treatment of opioid dependence to be approved under the Drug Addiction Treatment Act of 2000.
To be eligible for this type of treatment at the Third Avenue Clinic/San Diego Treatment Services, prospective patients much be at least 18 years old, and must have been addicted to or dependent upon opiates for a minimum of one year prior to seeking treatment.
